The coffin of slain Muslim lawyer Ko Ni is carried to a cemetery in Yangon on Jan 31, the day after he was gunned down in a politically charged murder case. (Reuters photo)The assassination of Ko Ni, a prominent Muslim lawyer and a key member of Myanmar's ruling National League for Democracy party (NLD) Party, has dealt a big blow to the country's democratisation. The first question concerns the silence of the country's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi. In her capacity as state counsellor, Ms Suu Kyi has control over the different ministries of the government, except for the three ministries constitutionally guaranteed for the military -- home, defence and border affairs. Another possible explanation is that since the home ministry, which is controlled by the military, has assured it will conduct a through investigation, Ms Suu Kyi is letting the law take its own course.
